TripMode

Save internet data

TripMode helps you control your Mac’s data use by choosing which apps can go online. It’s for you if you rely on mobile hotspots, roaming, or limited data plans.

What you get

Keep your Mac’s background activity from eating through your data allowance.

You can keep the apps you need online without letting background updates, backups, and photo syncing consume your hotspot allowance. With TripMode, you choose which apps may access the internet; everything else stays blocked until you allow it again. That leaves more of your limited data available for browsing, messaging, or work.

You can see your data use in real time and check totals by app, session, day, or another period. This helps you identify what’s using your allowance before deciding what to block. You can also set data limits, receive notifications, and have all traffic stop when a limit is reached.

You don’t have to repeat the same choices every time you connect. TripMode can activate automatically on networks where you’ve enabled it, and profiles let you keep different access rules for a work connection, mobile hotspot, or slow Wi-Fi.

  • Preserve your hotspot allowance

You can block updates, backups, and syncing while keeping the apps you need connected.

  • Find data-hungry apps

You can check live usage and totals by app or period to decide what should stay online.

  • Stop at your limit

You can set a data cap, receive notifications, and stop all traffic once you reach it.

  • Reuse your connection rules

You can keep different app permissions for different networks or situations, rather than choosing again each time.

Best for

  • You work from a mobile hotspot
  • You travel with a limited roaming allowance
  • You share a slow connection with background apps

Skip it if

You probably don’t need it if you always use an unlimited connection and have no reason to restrict individual apps.
