start

Discover a superior way to launch and organize applications on your Mac.

start is a Mac app launcher for you if you want your applications grouped by task and accessible from the menu bar, without adding more icons to your Dock.

What you get

Find and open the apps you need without crowding your Dock.

With start, you get one place in your menu bar to find and launch the apps Spotlight can access. You don’t have to add every frequently used app to your Dock or build an app list manually. You can browse ready-made groups such as Office and Development, search for an app, or return to recently used programs.

You can organize your apps around the work you do, using your own tags and subtags. Add comments and colors to make entries easier to recognize, and assign custom keyboard shortcuts to open your regular tools with fewer steps.

When you already have a file or folder ready, you can drag it onto an app’s entry to open it with that application. That lets you choose the app first without launching it and then navigating through its Open dialog.

  • Keep your Dock smaller

You can reach apps from the menu bar without giving each one a permanent Dock icon.

  • Find apps by task

You can group your tools with tags and subtags that reflect how you work.

  • Open regular tools faster

You can assign keyboard shortcuts to apps and revisit recently used programs.

  • Open files directly

You can drop a file or folder onto an app entry to open it with that application.

Best for

  • You use more apps than you want in your Dock
  • You want apps grouped by purpose or task
  • You prefer keyboard shortcuts for frequently used tools

Skip it if

You probably don’t need it if your Dock and Spotlight already make your apps easy enough to find and open.

From the developer

Dock is not perfect. You can’t put every app you use into this pretty limited bar. Luckily, you can put everything into start. This handy menu bar utility automatically collects every app accessible via Spotlight. From Apple’s default programs to installed apps. Launch it all from one place and forget the fuss.
