You can start with hundreds of file types, including MKV and AVI: drop a file into the app, choose an output preset, and start the conversion. You don't have to work out the detailed video and audio settings yourself.

You also avoid unnecessary conversion work. The app checks your file against the output you selected, then changes only the video or audio that needs changing. If either part is already compatible, it stays untouched. That can reduce waiting time and preserve the quality of the portions that don't need conversion.

Once your file is ready, you can have it added to iTunes automatically, saving you a separate import step.
