What you get

Open your files in the right app for each project.

Can Opener gives you one place to decide which apps open your files on your Mac. If you’re moving to a different code editor, you can reassign a whole group of file types together rather than change each one through Finder’s Get Info window. You can do the same for images or office documents, and undo recent changes if needed.

You can save separate setups for work and personal projects, then switch between them from the app or menu bar. That means your code and documents can open in different editors depending on what you’re working on. Files inside a client’s folder can also go directly to that client’s preferred app.

When you don’t want a fixed default, you can have a file type prompt you to choose an app whenever you open it. You can also keep web links opening in a browser while HTML source files open in your editor.

  • Switch editors without repetition

You can move an entire category of file types to another app instead of updating each association separately.

  • Keep project setups separate

You can save work and hobby configurations, then switch which apps open your code and documents.

  • Choose when you open

You can leave a file type undecided and pick an app from a chooser each time you open it.

  • Respect client requirements

You can send files in a client’s folder straight to the app they require.

  • Reverse unwanted changes

You can undo a recent association change without manually rebuilding your previous setup.

Best for

  • You’re switching to a new code editor
  • You use different apps for work and personal projects
  • You handle client files with specific app requirements

Skip it if

You don’t need it if your files already open in the apps you want and you rarely change those defaults.

From the developer

Can Opener is a default app manager for Mac that lets you change which app opens each file type, all in one place. Move twenty file types to a new editor at once, instead of digging through Get Info one by one. Save your setups as profiles, so “Work” and “Hobby project” are one click away. Not sure which app you want?
