FileRouter
Open files your way
FileRouter is a Mac utility for choosing which editor opens your files, suited to you if you use different apps for different folders, file types, or tasks.
by Brett Terpstra
What you get
Open your files in the editor you want for each context.
You can double-click a file and send it to your preferred editor for that particular context, rather than accept one default app for every file of its type. For example, you can open Markdown files from one folder in one editor and files from another folder in a different editor, without repeatedly using Open With.
You decide what determines the destination: file type, folder path, file name, parent directory, or which editors are already running. Your first matching rule determines where the file opens, while a fallback handles anything that doesn't match. You can also change the active editor from the menu bar.
When you want a different route on demand, you can use a global hotkey to open your selected files through a specific rule. You can also send file paths from Terminal, Shortcuts, or other URL-opening apps, so your automations open files in the intended editor. FileRouter directs the files; you still edit them in your chosen apps.
-
Stop reopening files
You can send double-clicked files to your preferred editor without taking a detour through Open With.
-
Keep folder-specific preferences
You can use different editors for the same file type depending on where your files are stored.
-
Choose with a shortcut
You can route your current file selection through a specific rule using a global hotkey.
-
Direct files from automations
You can pass file paths from Terminal or Shortcuts to a named routing rule, including rules disabled for everyday use.
Best for
- You switch between several text or Markdown editors
- You want different editor choices for different project folders
- You use scripts or Shortcuts to open files
Skip it if
You don't need it if one default app per file type already suits how you work.
